Jill Scott, the daughter of Joyce Scott in Philadelphia Pennsylvania was born on April 4, 1972. She was raised by her grandmother and she was an only child. Scott was a student at her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. Between two work as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. Her dream was to become an English teacher in high school. She was unable to fulfill the dream after three years of studying and working as a teaching assistant, she left college. Her career began as a spoken-word artist and performing live at poetry readings. She then teamed up together with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. Then, during Roots' show she showed herself to be an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada Tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
